NFI Certification Renewal Information

The NFI Certification renewal process has been designed to be as simple and user-friendly as possible. Once you have successfully passed the NFI exam and become NFI Certified, your certification will be valid for three years before it expires. You will have a number of different reminders to keep you aware of your certification’s expiration date, such as your frameable NFI Certificate or your NFI ID Card. NFI will also send you periodic mailings and emails to keep you aware of your certification’s status.
You can renew your certification before it expires one of two ways:

Renew Certification By CEUs

Special Note to those that are renewing a Pellet certification by exam in 2016

One of the characteristics of a good certification program is that you never take the same exam twice. The National Fireplace Institute normally updates one manual and exam every year. Work on the 5th Edition Pellet manual was originally scheduled to be completed by December 2015 and the 5th Edition exam was originally scheduled to be completed in early 2016. Due to the 2016 Job Analysis project, the 5th Edition Pellet update has been postponed. The new Pellet manual will be ready in late 2016 and the new the 5th Edition exam will be ready in early 2017.

  • If you are taking the Pellet exam for the first time: There is no change. Simply go to the NFI Price List page and order the exam.

  • If you are renewing your certification by CEUs: There is no change. Simply make sure you have accumulated enough CEUs and the "Renew Now" link will be shown on your page 60 days prior to your expiration date. Go back to the Industry Professional page, enter your last name and NFI ID number. The total number of CEUs in your account is at the bottom of the page.

  • If you are renewing your Pellet certification by taking the exam in 2016: Please go to the NFI Price List page and select the Pellet One-Year Extension option. Your Pellet certification will be extended until 2017, at which time you will be able to take the 5th Edition Pellet Exam.
