Homeowner Resources
One of the best ways to find competent professionals is to check their credentials. The National Fireplace Institute®, an independent, non-profit certification agency, conducts nationwide testing of hearth systems planners and technicians. Only those who pass a rigorous examination covering important topics like safety and placement, venting requirements, and installation guidelines receive NFI Professional Certification.
NFI, established in 2002, certifies planners and installers in three hearth product categories based upon fuel type:
- NFI Gas Specialist
- NFI Woodburning Specialist
- NFI Pellet Specialist
- NFI Hearth Design Specialist
NFI also recognizes individuals who have successfully gained all three NFI Certifications as Master Hearth Professionals. These individuals have reached the highest level of certification in the hearth industry.
While NFI Certification in itself is not a license or a guarantee of competence, it is an excellent indication of professional commitment and training. Working with a NFI Certified Specialist can help ensure that your fireplace or hearth appliance and venting system are planned and installed with proper attention to safety and performance.
NFI Certified Professionals have demonstrated proficiency in one or more of the following specialties: Wood burning appliances: Factory built solid fuel fireplaces, free-standing wood stoves, inserts and high effeciency built-in appliances. Gas hearth appliances: log sets, fireplaces, fireplace inserts, freestanding stoves. Pellet appliances: all pellet stoves and fireplace systems.
ASK YOUR NFI CERTIFIED SPECIALIST FOR HELP WITH IMPORTANT DECISIONS:
- Compliance with code regulations and manufactures’ instructions
- Size, type, features of the hearth appliance
- Proper materials for heat protection of walls and floors
- Appropriate size, type, configuration, and height of venting system
- Selection of proper fuel
- Guidelines for operation and maintenance of the hearth system
SHOW RESPECT FOR FIRE
A gas, wood, or pellet burning stove or fireplace can add beauty, warmth and value to your home and set the mood for memorable gatherings of family and friends. But choosing and installing a hearth product and chimney or vent without adequate expertise is like playing with fire.
Planning and installing fireplaces, stoves and their venting systems require considerable technical knowledge and skill. Numerous decisions from proper floor protection to appliance sizing and placement to venting system compatibility and height should be made with the assistance of a knowledgeable professional.
